Simple machines

Faakalofa lahi atu
Term 4 sees us exploring 'simple machines'. There are six basic types of simple machines: lever, inclined plane, pulley, wheel & axle, wedge and screw. We will be looking for examples of 'simple machines' in our world around us. Here is a link to a great website we have been using in class.

Holiday Stuff

Talofa Room 3,
Hoping that you're all having a lovely holiday break and being wee angels for your Mums and Dads.  I hope you have had a chance to have a go on some of the websites that I posted on our blog. I've had a go at making my own car. I had an awful lot of fun trying to drive it, Isiah and Ruthie were having a good old laugh at me. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your holidays and I'll see you all soon. Don't for get your swimming togs. School swimming starts on the first day back.
Here's my car

My very poor score!! I bet you all did far better than I did.

Wednesday's Community Time

Malo Families
I thought I would post a quick comment about our junior team community time. These are held each Wednesday from 2.15pm - 2.45pm. Community Time is a time where we get together as a team (Rooms1,3,4 and 10) and spend time working together on our values focus. Each teacher in the junior school takes turns at running it. We find this is very succesful way to get to know all the children in our team, and teach our values focus. Each Wednesday we present our class certificates. These are different from Friday assemblies as they a soley focused on celebrating the children who have achieved at the values focus. Some classes even vote as to who should recieve the awards, We sometimes do this in Room 3!

If your child recieves a green one of these certificates, they would have been presented at Community time. That means they have done a great job out in the playground in playing positive games and remembering to Agree on the rules, follow the rules and return the equipment.

Inquiry Learning Art Display, Check it out!!

Malo
Wow, apologies for not being able to update the blog, it been busy, busy, busy! I've got so many things to post now I don't seem to know where to start. Your children have been working very hard this term on our "Mysterious Cold Places" Inquiry. I have been impressed with all the facts that they have learnt and retained through out their learning experiences. As you can see the children natural 'wonderings' lead us to explore the different types of wildlife found in these cold places. I hope you enjoy some of these photos. They're even better in real life so please stop in and have a look.

We really enjoyed creating our Puffy Paint Polar bears

Cruz and working on his polar print. He has made a Penguin print using Plasticine.
 Great job Cruz!

Our Polar Prints. Watch out!!  We  have a penguin crossing and a Polar bear crossing

Developmental time!

On Friday we had 'Developmental time'. This is an opportunity for the children to design and create! It is also a fantastic time for me to observe the children working with each other, as well as showing they can being Responsible for their own learning by managing their time. It's also another good way for me to see our 4 R's in practise.

Our Learning Intention reads /(W.A.L.T):
We are learning to Create a piece of our own art or craft.
And our Success Criteria reads / (W.I.L.F)
What Im looking for in your art or craft is:
-Use of water colour paints
-Magazine pictures or words
-A drawing of your own
-Something glued on
-Your name

It was so interesting for me to observe the children working busily away at this task. Lots of fantastic focus! I'm so proud :)

Antarctic Centre Fun!!

On Monday, The Room 3 and Room 10 children went on a trip to the
Antarctic Centre.

The purpose of this trip was to spark an interest on this terms Inquiry topic  ’Mysterious Cold places’.
We were very happy with Jane, our teacher at the Antarctic Centre. She was a fantastic source of information and she looked after us all so well.
The day was spent, first in their special classroom where the  children were impressed with the interactive activities and clever blue lighting, which set the ‘mood’ for our Antarctic experience. We then had a thrilling ride on the Hagglund, my personal favourite. Then we had some time to spend with the little blue penguin's. The children asked some superb questions when watching these little guys. Next we watched a breath taking movie on Antarctica and afterwards we were able to spend some time in the Gallery where the children were able to move freely and have some ‘hands on’ experiences with the attractions and equipment on offer. Our grand finale was the ‘Snow and ice experience’ ; we were all treated to a ‘summer’s day’ in Antarctica. A day in Antarctica wouldn't be complete without a snowstorm, so we all huddled together through a snowstorm with a minus 18 degree wind chill factor! Something many of the children will never forget.
I was so proud of Room 3. They all followed our 4 R’s and which made our day pleasant and enjoyable. The children  gave everything a go and had a truck load of fun. Thank you families for supporting this trip, it was an amazing experience for all who went.
